AEM UPGRADE FOR CAPELLA UNIVERSITY FROM 5.6.1 TO 6.1

TA Digital’s team upgraded Capella University from AEM 5.6.1 to AEM 6.1 and migrated them from AWS to an on-premise setup, which helped Capella gain more control over the system to customize and integrate necessary features.

PROJECT CHALLENGE

Capella University was using AEM 5.6.1 as its content management system to create site content and market services provided to prospects and existing students. AEM 5.6.1 was hosted on AWS causing Capella to make a considerable investment to maintain and operate.

Capella not only wanted to upgrade from AEM 5.6.1 to AEM 6.1 but also wanted to migrate from AWS cloud to an on-premise solution.

The challenges identified during an audit performed by the managed services team are as follows:

  • Missing masking of server identification information.
  • Adobe security hotfixes installation on AEM.
  • Vanity URL cache flush.
  • CI enhancements to existing Jenkins jobs.
  • Optimize DR plan per AEM 6.1.
  • Monitoring.
“Tech Aspect DevOps resources have been of great help with our migration activities. They not only supported the full migration, but also demonstrated technical thought leadership in helping us with options for Business Continuity and DR planning. It has been a great pleasure working with the TA team.”
Narayanan Sundaresan, Director – Enterprise Digital, Technology Solutions, Capella University

OUR SOLUTION

TA Digital’s team upgraded Capella University from AEM 5.6.1 to AEM 6.1 and migrated them from AWS to an on-premise setup, which helped Capella gain more control over the system to customize and integrate necessary features.

TA Digital performed a detailed audit before completing the tasks required for an upgrade and migration from 5.6.1 to 6.1.

  • VM configuration, installation, monitoring, and maintenance was performed.
  • 6.0 offline compaction was performed.
  • Content and DAM packages were installed from 5.6.1 – 6.1 environments (lower and higher environments).
  • Automated daily backups were customized and created for on-premise hosting of AEM environments.
  • Set up of cold standby author, as active clustering was not available.
  • Daily backups for public publishing instances were created.
  • Monitoring alerts were setup for repository usage, alerts were triggered to intimate 70% usage and offline compaction was set up to bring down the usage and free up space for the repository.
  • Collaborated with Capella ops team to perform monitoring of servers.
  • Off-hours support was provided for high-priority items and resolutions were provided for any issues encountered.
  • As there was no DR plan and strategy in place, the TA Digital team created new Rsync scripts for AEM 6.1 environment.

FINAL RESULT

TA Digital helped Capella migrate from AWS to on-premise and upgrade from AEM 5.6.1 to 6.1. The team at TA Digital not only stabilized the on-premise environment and optimized performance by 20% and helped Capella reduce their total cost of ownership.

“Managing AEM instance on AWS was proving tough with custom integrations and knowledge gaps. TA Digital provided us with multiple options as well as technical knowledge during our upgrade to migrate the instance on premise leading to a better managed solution and integration with existing enterprise tools for monitoring systems and backups. TA Digital’s expertise was also a key in setting up our DR and business continuity solution.”
