An abandoned cart is an incomplete order, in which the user adds some products but never moves to complete the checkout process or never submits the order and exit the site.
Oracle ATG ecommerce comes with the capability to handle abandoned carts. It has a module, which is bundled with tools and services, which helps with the following useful tasks:

Let’s understand the stages of order in the process of abandoned cart. The diagram below explains the flow of order in an abandoned cart scenario:
Abandoned orders are orders which are in an incomplete state or orders that have not been checked out by customers. These orders are idle for a duration of time which is customized by business user. In this case, the order is consider as “ABANDONED”.
Reanimated orders are orders which were abandoned orders and the customer modifies the order in some way, like adding or removing items or increasing or decreasing quantity. Here, the order state is considered as “REANIMATED”.
Converted orders are orders which are basically abandoned orders and the customer comes back to make some modifications and checks out the order. Here the order state is considered as “CONVERTED”.
Lost orders are orders which are Abandoned orders that remain abandoned for very long time and crossed the idle time set by the business user and checking out of such order may not be allowed. In this case, the order state will be “LOST”
Oracle ATG ecommerce uses abandonmentInfo repository (database) to maintain the abandoned order details. This repository holds the following information:

|state||Current state of the order|
|abandonmentCount||How many times the order terns into abandoned order|
|abandonmentDate||Most recently abandoned date|
|reanimationDate||Most recently reanimated date|
|conversionDate||Most recently converted date|
|lostDate||Most recently lost date|
Also, ATG has AbandonedOrderLogRepository which contains information of orders that were abandoned orders, but are now converted orders after being checked out.
Abandoned Order Service component
Oracle ATG ecommerce has a schedulable service called AbandonedOrderService which constantly keep checking for orders matching the criteria to identify the orders as Abandoned orders. This component keeps querying order repository at specific schedule. Abandoned Order Service reads configuration from abandoned order tools component. In this component, we can configure what action needs to be performed on these orders.

Abandoned order service can be configured to send messages to users informing about their abandoned cart. This can also be used to configure to send promotional messages in case or price drop or any other discounts are applicable.
